Tom Cruise Opens Up About Terrifying Mission: Impossible 8 Stunt: “I Blacked Out 12 Stories Up”

Tom Cruise has long been known for his fearless commitment to performing his own stunts, but even Hollywood’s most daring action star recently faced a moment that shook him to his core. The actor revealed that during filming of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (also known as Mission: Impossible 8), he suffered a terrifying injury after blacking out mid-stunt — twelve stories above the ground.

“We were shooting this sequence where Ethan Hunt jumps from a moving helicopter onto a rooftop,” Cruise recalled in a recent interview. “It was one of the most complex stunts we’ve ever done — wind, height, timing, everything had to be perfect. And then, midair, something went wrong. I blacked out for a second. I don’t even remember landing.”

The sequence, directed by longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, was filmed over several days in South Africa. Cruise explained that fatigue and a sudden shift in wind conditions contributed to the mishap, despite having performed the stunt safely multiple times before. “I’d been doing back-to-back takes, and the physical toll was real,” he said. “When I came to, I was hanging by my harness, twelve stories up. My team got to me fast, but yeah… that one shook me.”

Production reportedly paused for several hours as the crew assessed the situation, concerned Cruise might have sustained a concussion. A set insider commented, “Tom’s adrenaline kept him going, but once he was back on the ground, we all saw how close that call was. He’s tough as nails, but he’s human.”

At 63, Cruise continues to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, from hanging off the side of an Airbus A400 in Rogue Nation to scaling the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol. Yet even he admits this incident served as a sobering reminder. “I’ve always said safety comes first, and we’re meticulous about it,” he said. “But sometimes, things happen that remind you how real the danger is. I woke up the next morning and thought, ‘Alright, that could’ve been it.’”

Despite the scare, Cruise returned to set just days later to complete the scene. “That’s who Ethan Hunt is,” he laughed. “And honestly, that’s who I am. I don’t like to leave anything unfinished. But yeah, I’ve learned to listen to my body a bit more since then.”

Director McQuarrie praised Cruise’s resilience, noting that the near-accident prompted additional safety reviews on set. “Tom sets the bar incredibly high,” he said. “But he also sets the example that no shot is worth someone getting hurt.”

As fans eagerly await the release of Mission: Impossible 8, Cruise’s revelation adds another chapter to the legend of one of Hollywood’s most fearless stars. Reflecting on the experience, he offered a rare moment of vulnerability: “I love what I do, but there was a moment up there — hanging twelve stories above the world — when I thought, maybe I’ve gone far enough. And then I smiled, because I knew I’d be right back up there the next day.”
