Jennifer Lopez has enjoyed a remarkable career across film, music, and television, but even major stars have moments they look back on with second thoughts. In a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Lopez revealed that she turned down a role that would go on to earn critical acclaim — and an Oscar nomination.
The Role That Got Away
Lopez shared that she was originally offered the lead role in the 2002 film Unfaithful, directed by Adrian Lyne. “The script wasn’t good, and then he made it great,” she said, explaining why she initially passed on it. After she stepped away from the project, Diane Lane was cast in the role — and her performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2003 Academy Awards.
With a mix of humor and honesty, Lopez admitted, “It haunts me a little bit, because it’s the one that I turned down. It was just like, ‘Why did you turn down working with Adrian Lyne? What were you thinking?’”
A Defining Role for Diane Lane
Unfaithful, which starred Lane opposite Richard Gere, became one of the standout films of the early 2000s. Lane’s portrayal of Constance “Connie” Sumner received widespread praise and solidified her status as a respected dramatic actress. That year, she competed in a highly competitive Oscar category alongside Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek, Julianne Moore, and Renée Zellweger. Kidman ultimately took home the award for The Hours.
Lopez Keeps It Light — and Honest
Despite describing the decision as something that still lingers in her memory, Lopez spoke about it with good spirits and self-awareness. “Who knows what was going on with me at the time?” she laughed.
During the same media tour, Lopez also appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she was asked to reveal her favorite on-screen kiss from her long list of leading men. With stars like George Clooney, Richard Gere, Matthew McConaughey, and Ralph Fiennes among her co-stars over the years, the question drew laughs — but Lopez had an unexpected answer.
“I just did a movie with Brett Goldstein,” she said, referencing her upcoming romantic comedy Office Romance, “and I’d say he was the best kisser.”
Looking Forward
Missed opportunities are part of any long career, but Lopez continues to push forward with new projects and surprises. As she steps into new roles — including fresh ventures in romantic comedies — her reflections offer a rare glimpse into how even household names experience “what if” moments.
For Lopez, one turned-down script may still linger in memory — but her story is far from finished.
