Why Denzel Washington, Not Charlie Kirk, Deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is America’s highest civilian honor, intended to recognize individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution” to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural and humanitarian endeavors. In recent discussions, the name of Charlie Kirk, the 32-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and prominent podcast host, has surfaced as a potential recipient. But when measured against the spirit of the award, the contrast could not be starker.

Supporters of Kirk point to his media presence and advocacy for “free speech,” yet much of his career thrives on provocation, division, and theatrics. Viral content and attention-grabbing statements may garner followers, but influence alone does not equate to meritorious service. If the Medal of Freedom is to retain its significance, it cannot be awarded for media stunts or online controversy.

Enter Denzel Washington. For decades, Washington has dedicated his life and art to illuminating justice, dignity, and the Black American experience. From his commanding portrayals in Malcolm X and The Hurricane to his mentorship of young artists, Washington’s work consistently reflects courage, empathy, and moral clarity. He has not only entertained but educated and inspired generations, giving voice to struggles too often ignored.

Beyond film, Washington’s support for Black creatives and philanthropic efforts demonstrates a tangible commitment to uplifting communities. His engagement with the spiritual and cultural power of music and art reinforces a lifelong dedication to freedom and representation — accomplishments grounded in action rather than rhetoric.

Awarding the Medal of Freedom should honor those who embody the highest ideals of the nation: courage, compassion, and a genuine commitment to equality. Denzel Washington exemplifies these qualities. Giving the award to a media provocateur risks cheapening its meaning.

America needs heroes of conscience, not content creators chasing virality. In every measure — artistry, advocacy, mentorship, and moral impact — Denzel Washington has earned the nation’s highest civilian honor. Charlie Kirk has not.
