Taylor Sheridan’s hit Paramount+ series, Landman , which has been positioned by some as a “conservative” counterpoint to “woke” television, took direct aim this week at ABC’s long-running daytime talk show, The View . The episode, titled “The Pirate Dinner,” features a dialogue that criticizes the co-hosts for their perceived hatred of wealth, men, and Donald Trump.
Thornton’s Character Calls ‘The View’ Hosts ‘Pissed-Off Millionaires’
The controversial exchange takes place between the series’ main character, oilman Tommy Norris (played by Billy Bob Thornton ), and his father, TL (played by Sam Elliott ).During their conversation, Tommy offers a scathing assessment of the ABC show, according to details reported by Variety .
Tommy Norris rips the show, calling it: “A bunch of pissed-off millionaires bitching about how much they hate millionaires and Trump and men and you and me and everybody else they got a bee up their ass about.It’s pretty funny.
The elder TL, delivered in Elliott’s characteristic grumbly tone, replies with skepticism: “Don’t sound funny.”
Tommy clarifies his humor: “Well, it ain’t joke funny,” he says, “it’s like ‘fart in church’ funny, you know what I mean?”
TL remains unconvinced: “That doesn’t sound funny, either.”
The exchange concludes with Tommy’s final, pragmatic observation: “Well, it depends on your proximity to the fart.”
Series Previously Targeted Green Energy
The current season is not the first time Landman has waded into culture-war topics. The series has garnered attention for its anti-“woke” and pro-fossil fuel stance.
Last year, the character of Tommy Norris expressed strong opposition to green energy initiatives. He was heard ripping wind turbines, questioning their environmental impact and sustainability.
“Do you have any idea how much diesel they had to burn to mix that much concrete?” Tommy asks in one scene, referring to the construction of a turbine. “You want to guess how much oil it takes to lubricate that fucking thing? Or winterize it?”
He further argued against the long-term carbon offset: “In its 20-year lifespan, it won’t offset the carbon footprint of making it,” he adds.
The character also took aim at electric vehicles, stating: “And don’t get me started on solar panels and the lithium in your Tesla battery.” He also raised a practical concern about the country’s infrastructure to handle a mass transition to electric power, concluding: “And never mind the fact that, if the whole world decides to go electric tomorrow, we don’t have the transmission lines to get the electricity to the cities.It’d take 30 years if we start tomorrow.”
Billy Bob Thornton himself was a guest on The View when Landman premiered in 2024. The current dialogue ensures that the show remains a prominent topic of conversation both on and off-screen.
