Cillian Murphy has candidly discussed the “absolutely and completely underwhelming goodbye” he shared with the Peaky Blinders saga, even as he prepares for the final curtain call in the upcoming Netflix movie. The 49-year-old Irish actor is set to reprise his iconic role as gangster Tommy Shelby in the feature-length conclusion, The Immortal Man . This film will provide the ultimate farewell after his run from 2013 to 2022 on the BBC’s hit series.
The movie, written by show creator Steven Knight, transports Tommy Shelby back to a bombed-out Birmingham during World War II. He gets involved in secret, true-event-based wartime missions, confronting new threats while reckoning with his past amid rising national stakes. The Immortal Man is scheduled for a Netflix release in March 2026.
Speaking to Empire , the Oscar-winning star revealed that filming his final scene for the movie failed to live up to expectations. “We were on the side of a hill in the Peak District somewhere, in the p*****g rain, and we were losing the light,” he recalled, noting, “But it was a really emotional scene.” Despite the emotional weight, Murphy admitted that after the shot was completed, “everyone just drove off.”
Although filming has concluded, Murphy feels the finality of the role has yet to sink in. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to process it or think about it until the film comes out, because I believe that a film isn’t finished until people look at it,” he explained.
Earlier this month, Netflix confirmed the release strategy. The film will be available in select cinemas from March 6, 2026, before streaming on Netflix globally from March 20. Murphy commented on the action, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders . This is one for the fans.”
Writer Steven Knight amped up the anticipation, promising an explosive chapter. “The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders … It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war,” he said.
The ensemble cast sees Cillian Murphy joined by a host of established names, including Dune ‘s Rebecca Ferguson, Reservoir Dogs ‘ Tim Roth, Sophie Rundle ( Gentleman Jack ), Ned Dennehy ( Culprits ), Packy Lee ( Blue Lights ), Ian Peck ( His Dark Materials ), Jay Lycurgo ( Steve ), Barry Keoghan ( Saltburn ), and Stephen Graham ( Adolescence ).
Rebecca Ferguson, 42, a newcomer to the franchise, called her decision to sign on a “no-brainer.” She shared with the Radio Times her long-held desire to collaborate with Murphy. “I wanted to work with Cillian for a very long time, and we have the same agent, so I’ve been constantly calling saying, ‘What’s up? What’s going on? What are we doing?'” she revealed. Of joining the established world, Ferguson added, “When this came it was a no-brainer for me. What’s fun is coming into a world that is so sedimented, it’s so rooted, it has such a profound following, it’s quite scary. It was an honor, the fact that they trusted me to do it – because it’s a huge movie.” Peaky Blinders is currently available for streaming on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
