Democratic “Squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has sparked controversy after claiming that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pulled over her adult son on Saturday. Omar stated her son, who was born in the United States, was stopped shortly after leaving a Target store.
“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents,” Omar told WCCO, as reported by NBC News on Sunday. “Once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go.” She noted that her son carries his passport with him “everywhere.”
This incident comes as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigration and on illegal aliens committing crimes. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently mentioned that over 2.5 million illegal immigrants have left the country since Trump took office in January, according to Breitbart News.
Family and Political Ties to Anti-ICE Sentiment
The congresswoman’s family has been vocal about their political stances against immigration enforcement. In June, Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, praised anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles. Hirsi controversially connected immigration enforcement to the conflict in Gaza.
As radical protesters clashed with police and ICE agents in downtown LA, far-left activist Hirsi publicly endorsed the unrest. She linked the activity to the war in Gaza, stating: “From LA to Rafah, there is one common oppressor. Death to the colonial empire. Life for our children.” This message, which grouped ICE and Israel as part of the same “colonial oppressor” system, drew sharp criticism for appearing to glorify violence.
Defense of Somali Migrants Amidst Major Fraud Case
Meanwhile, Rep. Omar and other Democrats have actively defended Somali migrants in Minnesota. This show of support is taking place amidst a massive $1 billion fraud case involving taxpayer money.
“Despite all this fraud, Democrats, both locally and nationally, are rushing to show their support for Minnesota’s Somali migrants, especially in light of the president’s plans to end the protected status for them,” a Breitbart News article reported. The widespread fraud issue has prompted questions regarding what Omar knew about the scheme and when she became aware of it.
The intense scrutiny on Omar’s political activities and connections has drawn harsh words from her Republican colleagues. During a recent appearance on Breitbart News Daily , House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) leveled a serious accusation. Emmer referred to Omar as one of the most “duplicitous con artists” he had ever encountered.
