A family in Ilocos Sur, Philippines, is calling the discovery a miracle after a devastating house fire destroyed nearly all of their possessions, sparing only one deeply treasured item: their Bible. Ruth Mary Repuyan and her family returned to the ruins of their home on November 27. The structure was heavily damaged, and most of their belongings had been reduced to black ash and melted debris.
The family began the difficult task of sifting through the wreckage, hoping to recover anything. As they searched, Repuyan spotted a thick object partly buried under the scorched rubble, as reported by Viral Press. Expecting it to be ruined like everything else, she pulled the item free.
To her astonishment, it was the family’s Bible, almost completely untouched by the blaze. A video shows Repuyan lifting the book from the ashes and flipping through its pages, which appear intact and unmarked. Remarkably, the cover, spine, and paper show no visible signs of scorching or melting despite the extensive damage all around it. A second book nearby, however, was heavily damaged.
“We will celebrate Christmas with nothing left,” Repuyan stated. “Everything was burnt, and the only thing we have is the Bible. This is a miracle.” The Philippines is home to over 99 million Christians, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, giving deep significance to the object.
Undamaged in the Flames: Other Reports of Bibles Surviving Fire
The Repuyan family’s experience is not unique. There have been previous reports of Bibles remaining undamaged in major house fires. For example, in the fall of 2024, Cindy Cole, a 62-year-old grandmother from Nashville, Georgia, lost her home during Hurricane Helene.
Cole was asleep during the storm on the night of September 26 when she heard a voice, which she later described as divine intervention, as reported by Fox News Digital and others. “I had this little voice that kept saying, ‘Get up! Go to another room in your house,’” she told news agency SWNS.
The “voice” came to her when the electricity went out. She heard it again, “saying, ‘Get up! Go to another room.’ ” Cole got up and left the room. Within five minutes, a large tree from her neighbor’s yard “crashed into the bedroom” and landed directly on her bed. “I’m thinking it was the Lord telling me to move to another room,” she said.
When Cole returned to survey the damage, she was shocked to see her room completely destroyed, yet her Bible remained untouched. She said at the time, “You cannot touch the word of the Lord. You cannot touch it.”
