The sequence required Connery’s role as James Bond to swim within the pool alongside the dangerous predators. The production team, led by Director Terence Young, constructed a thin, internal Plexiglass barrier—a corridor—intended to separate Connery from the sharks during close-ups. Connery, already wary of the risky stunt, had insisted on the presence of the Plexiglass.

However, during one take in the Bahamas, a catastrophic safety failure occurred. It was discovered that the Plexiglass barrier did not extend fully across the pool, leaving a crucial gap. It was through this small gap that one of the large, real sharks managed to breach the perimeter and enter Connery’s side of the pool. As Connery later recounted, when he spotted the shark heading directly toward him in the water, he abandoned his cool, unflappable 007 persona immediately.
