In a stunning interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas launched a blistering attack on the Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ), claiming his recent indictment on bribery and money laundering charges was a politically motivated “weaponization” of the federal agency. Cuellar, who has been a vocal critic of former President Joe Biden’s border policies, alleged his prosecution was direct retaliation for his stance on open borders.
The interview with Maria Bartiromo followed closely on the heels of President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “full and unconditional pardon” for Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, via Truth Social. Trump characterized the case as a prime example of the Biden administration utilizing the FBI and DOJ to target political opponents, specifically those who opposed the administration’s immigration agenda. “For years, the Biden Administration weaponized the Justice System against their Political Opponents, and anyone who disagreed with them,” Trump stated, praising Cuellar’s courage in speaking out against the “Biden Border Catastrophe.”
Cuellar, visibly relieved after the pardon, strongly endorsed Trump’s assessment. When asked if the indictment was a result of his criticisms of the administration’s “open border” policies, the Texas Democrat was unequivocal: “Absolutely. The president was right. And I now — looking at all of the evidence and looking at everything — I definitely feel that I was weaponized.”
The charges against Cuellar were originally filed in May 2024, alleging he accepted approximately $600,000 in bribes from an Azerbaijan-owned energy company and a Mexican bank in exchange for political favors in Washington. His wife was also named in the case. Cuellar, however, has consistently maintained his innocence, insisting there was no evidence of any wrongdoing.
Outrage Over Family Involvement and Failed Sting Operation
During the interview, Cuellar voiced his outrage over the DOJ’s decision to involve his family in the legal battle. “I’ll tell you something… if they want to come after me, because I was a critic about open borders, that’s one thing. But you don’t bring the family in. You just don’t do that,” he asserted. “You don’t — as a prosecutor — you just don’t do that type of situation.”
He further detailed his review of the evidence, stating he was permitted to see grand jury testimony—a rare occurrence. Cuellar claimed this testimony proved his innocence: “Look, let me say this. You know, first of all, we’re innocent. And we have looked at all the evidence that got provided through discovery… And not a single person that testified — and I’ll emphasize this — there’s not a single person [who] said there was a quid pro quo.”
The Congressman then dropped a bombshell allegation, claiming the investigation included a failed sting operation orchestrated by the Biden administration to entrap him. “What they did there was wrong… So again, no quid pro quo from any of the evidence, from any of the individuals,” Cuellar contended. “And, therefore, they even did attempt a sting operation where they were trying to entrap me. And that failed.” When Bartiromo asked who was behind the attempted bribery and entrapment, Cuellar pointed directly to the White House and the federal agency: “So they — the Biden administration — they tried to entrap me and tried to bribe me, and that failed. And this is very significant because one more thing, everything came in from the DOJ in D.C.”
Calls for Investigation and Future Within the Party
In response to what he views as an abuse of power, Cuellar revealed he has reached out to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to discuss a potential investigation into the prosecutors involved in his case.
As a moderate Democrat representing a border district, Cuellar has often defied his party on immigration policy. His previous warnings to fellow Democrats, including Biden, about the political fallout from the border crisis are now seen through the lens of this alleged political retribution.
The pardon, which Trump noted ends his “nightmare,” allows Cuellar to focus on his future within the Democratic Party and, more importantly, on serving his constituents.
