The fourth season of Netflix’s The Witcher has come and gone, with the fifth and final season already deep in post-production. The final installment of the Liam Hemsworth, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra series is expected to arrive sometime next year. Meanwhile, various interviews and tidbits from the cast and crew continue to emerge. This time, a slight surprise came from Freya Allan herself, the actress who plays Ciri.
Allan Opens Up on Doubts After Cavill’s Exit
In a new interview with NME, Freya Allan revealed that she “spent a solid amount of time” considering whether she would exit The Witcher following Season 3, after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role of Geralt. Naturally, she ultimately chose to stay. Allan stated, “Once I’d made that choice, I made the most of every moment.” She offered insight into her doubts about continuing, explaining that “Season three was a really difficult season for everyone.” She added, “I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father. For the first time, I was seeing what life away from The Witcher could look like and then the lead moves on…”
Welcoming Liam Hemsworth and Maintaining Loyalty to Geralt
Freya and the rest of the cast made efforts to ensure Liam Hemsworth felt as comfortable and welcome as possible stepping into Cavill’s shoes. Allan commented on the reaction, saying, “Fans just love to hate on something. We’ve made it clear that we’re welcoming him with open arms.” However, Allan confessed to NME that the transition “was very weird.” She admitted that she still pictured Cavill’s face every time Ciri was thinking about Geralt in the script for Season 4, stating, “He’s the Geralt I grew up with.”
Taking on the Mantle of Book Advocate
During the same interview, Allan disclosed a change in her role behind the scenes following Cavill’s exit. She took on the mantle of the person who would always push for certain scenes to be included, even if they were not initially written in the scripts. “I really want to give fans what they want,” she said. Allan was inspired by her former co-star, noting, “I’d also seen Henry, who was so knowledgeable and loyal to the books, push for certain lines to be included. When he left, I was inspired to take on that role.”
Surprise at Fandom Critique
Perhaps for that reason, Freya expressed surprise that some of the critique of the new season targeted scenes that were actually faithful to the source material. Allan noted, “The thing that’s surprised me most about season four is how many people have criticised things that are straight from the books.” She admitted she was tempted to create a burner account on Reddit to argue with people, though she ultimately refrained.
A Satisfying Conclusion
Looking ahead, Freya shared her feelings about the fifth and final season, which will air next year. She concluded, “That final season took everything out of me, but I feel so incredibly satisfied.” The Witcher Season 4 has been available since October 30, 2025.
