The bionic arm, known as a “Hero Arm” and created by the Bristol-based company Open Bionics, is a lightweight, affordable, and partially 3D-printed device that picks up signals from muscles in the residual limb, allowing for multi-grip functionality. Open Bionics holds a royalty-free licensing agreement with Lucasfilm, enabling them to produce covers featuring Star Wars and other Disney designs. Bella was the first person in the United States to receive the device with the distinctive R2-D2 aesthetic, a choice her mother noted was inspired by the droid’s cool patterns and the fact that Luke Skywalker also lost a hand.
