WATCH as one iconic 2000 red-carpet moment from Jennifer Lopez drives over 10 million searches, pushing stunned Google engineers to invent Google Images.

In February 2000, Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet at the 42nd Grammy Awards wearing a plunging, sheer green Versace dress known as the “Jungle Dress.” She had no idea that a single fashion moment would not only become a cultural phenomenon but also directly lead to a major technological breakthrough.

The Global Search Frenzy

The dress, featuring a dramatic slit and neckline, instantly captivated the world. The reaction was so extreme that millions of people flocked to Google to search for images of Jennifer Lopez in the outfit.

At the time, Google’s search results were limited to plain text and lists of blue links. When users typed in queries like ” Jennifer Lopez green dress ,” they wanted a picture, but Google’s core product couldn’t deliver visual results directly.

  • Massive Demand: Eric Schmidt , then-CEO of Google, later confirmed that the search query for the dress was the most popular query Google had ever seen to date.

  • The Problem: Schmidt wrote, “But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J-Lo wearing that dress.”

The Birth of Google Images

The overwhelming and unmet demand for visual content served as a critical wake-up call to the Google search team. It made it “so clear that this was important,” according to Cathy Edwards , a director of engineering and product for Google Images.

Recognizing that the internet was evolving into a multimedia-driven space, Google engineers were inspired to create a dedicated image-based search engine. They paired engineer Huican Zhu with product manager Susan Wojcicki (later CEO of YouTube) to build the feature.

Google Images was officially launched in July 2001 , directly addressing the need exposed by Jennifer Lopez’s iconic red-carpet moment. The launch revolutionized how people searched the internet, making visual content central to the online experience.
