Lily-Rose Depp may have grown up surrounded by cinema, but one of her earliest film memories wasn’t filled with wonder — it was heartbreak.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the 25-year-old actress revealed that watching her father, Johnny Depp, in Edward Scissorhands as a toddler left a lasting emotional mark.
“I was traumatised watching it at three — not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him, and I got really upset,” she shared.
Growing Up in a Cinematic Household
The daughter of Johnny Depp and French artist Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose was raised between two countries and two creative worlds. Despite her lineage, she insists that she and her father approach acting very differently.
“We’re very different actors,” she said. “But you’re a product of your environment, and it’s a world I’ve always been very interested in.”
Her father is widely known for his work in gothic and fantasy cinema — from Sleepy Hollow to Sweeney Todd — genres that Lily-Rose admits she is naturally drawn to as well.
‘Nosferatu’ and the Pursuit of “Meaty” Roles
Lily-Rose is set to star as Ellen Hutter in Robert Eggers’ upcoming gothic horror Nosferatu, a reimagining of the 1922 German Expressionist classic. She describes the experience as one of the most demanding — and rewarding — of her career.
“It was intimidating and daunting, but an incredible privilege,” she said. “It’s the most technical set I’ve ever been on — almost like going to film school.”
The film features an all-star cast including Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, placing Lily-Rose in the heart of a high-profile ensemble.
As an actor, she says she craves roles that push her emotionally.
“I’m interested in the darker underbelly of things. You hope your role is as meaty as possible — so you have something real to dive into.”
On Love, Privacy, and Finding Happiness
While Lily-Rose has spent much of her life in the public eye, she remains selective about what she shares. Speaking briefly about her relationship with musician 070 Shake (Danielle Balbuena), she offered a rare moment of openness.
“I’m super in love and super happy,” she said. “I’ve always been private, but it’s hard not to talk about her because I’m so happy.”
A Career on Her Own Terms
From The King to HBO’s The Idol, Lily-Rose Depp continues to carve out a unique path in Hollywood — one rooted in artistic curiosity rather than legacy.
As she steps into darker, more complex roles, she makes it clear that while she comes from cinematic royalty, her ambition is entirely her own.
