Actor Taran Killam barely managed to keep his cool during a surprise encounter with his wife Cobie Smulders’ co-star, Hollywood icon Harrison Ford. The “SNL” alum recounted the story of his recent brush with fame to Seth Meyers on “Late Night” Monday, while promoting his new show “Stumble.”
The connection to Ford began during Killam’s time on “SNL,” where his impression of the star led to a unique gig. Director JJ Abrams reached out to Killam to dub one of Ford’s lines for a special effects reel, a request Abrams ultimately felt “guilty” about almost letting slide through.
Years later, Killam’s wife, Cobie Smulders, landed a recurring role on the Apple TV series “Shrinking,” which stars Ford. The face-to-face meeting happened unexpectedly while Killam and Smulders were shopping for jeans. Killam was in a clothing store when a salesman tried to upsell him on the type of boots Ford famously wore in “Indiana Jones”—and moments later, Ford walked in.
“It was like we’d manifested him,” Killam recalled. He credited his wife with giving him “so much credit,” as she could tell he was struggling to maintain his composure. Killam managed a brief, seemingly calm greeting. “I was like, ‘Mr. Ford, how are you? I’m Taran Killam, I did you once on the show. We have mutual friends, and my wife will be working with you, and I enjoy your work.'”
However, immediately Ford left the store, Killam admitted his fanboy persona erupted. He “rattled off at an intense speed,” turning to Smulders with a stream of nervous self-analysis. “‘Wasn’t I so cool? I wanted to tell him about that time I did his voice on the ‘Star Wars’ reel, which I didn’t even do it! Was I sweating, because I felt like I was sweating a lot, and that’s my hero, and oh my god, we’re buying four sets of boots.'”
Host Seth Meyers, who worked with Killam during their “SNL” days, admitted he was truly impressed that Killam had managed to hold it together even for that brief exchange with the legendary actor.
