Denzel Washington Moved to Tears by Aiyana-Lee’s Performance in Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’

Iconic actor Denzel Washington was unexpectedly moved to tears during a scene with singer Aiyana-Lee in Spike Lee’s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest . The emotional reaction from Washington, known for his reserved demeanor, was completely unscripted, as director Lee revealed in a recent interview with Variety on Tuesday (Nov. 25).

Lee recounted the process of casting the rising star after hearing her song, “My Idols Lied to Me.” Aiyana-Lee portrays Sula, an aspiring singer, opposite Washington’s character, a record executive named King.

The deeply moving moment occurred at the climax of the film. Aiyana-Lee performs the movie’s title track, “Highest 2 Lowest.” This performance visibly brings Washington’s character to tears. “When he’s tearing up, that’s you,” Spike Lee confirmed to Variety, suggesting the reaction was a genuine, organic response from Washington himself.

Aiyana-Lee, the British singer, discussed the creative process behind the song. “For that ending, we needed to have a crescendo,” she explained. “I wrote a lot of songs, and we ended up with this very soulful song that feels very autobiographical.” She noted that Lee encouraged her to infuse the track with her personal truth. This included her own experiences with “the hardships and those highs and lows.” The song, she believes, “really encapsulated the film, the journey, the messaging and where we’re at by that endpoint.”

Highest 2 Lowest is a crime thriller directed by Spike Lee and produced by A24. It is an adaptation of the 1963 Japanese film High and Low by Akira Kurosawa. The blockbuster film, which also stars rappers A$AP Rocky and Ice Spice, premiered in theaters in August and is currently available for streaming on AppleTV+.
