This move marks a potential major shift in EU policy, removing previous age-based requirements and allowing children to access legal gender recognition (LGR) solely through self-declaration. The Commission stated it will “facilitate exchanges of best practices among member states to support the development of legal gender recognition procedures based on self-determination that are free from age restrictions.”
The proposal has immediately sparked a fierce debate across the continent. Supporters and advocates for transgender rights are hailing it as a crucial step toward personal freedom and full equality, arguing that medical or judicial requirements are intrusive and violating fundamental human rights.
