Steven Adler , the talented original drummer for Guns N’ Roses, laid the essential, swinging foundation for the band’s signature raw groove, defining classics like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Welcome to the Jungle.” However, his spiraling substance abuse caused immense stress and costly delays during the recording sessions for the ambitious Use Your Illusion albums.
The Fateful Recording Session
The breaking point arrived in the studio while the band was attempting to record the track “Bad Obsession.” Sources indicate Steven’s addiction had become so severe that he repeatedly struggled to play the drum part consistently, despite dozens of attempts. This inability to perform, coupled with his constant absences and disruptions, led Axl Rose and the band to issue a firm ultimatum: Steven had to get sober or be fired. He was eventually forced to face a court order requiring sobriety following a drug arrest.
A Firing and a Musical Shift
Tragically, Steven failed to maintain his promise and was officially fired by Axl Rose and the rest of the band in 1990 . Although a painful decision marks the end of the classic GNR lineup, Adler’s departure forced the band into a major musical pivot. His replacement, Matt Sorum , brought a more powerful, precise, and less rhythmically fluid style to the drums. This change paved the way for the more epic, grandiose, and complex tracks of the Use Your Illusion era, propelling Guns N’ Roses to new heights of global fame but fundamentally changing the gritty, hard rock ‘n’ roll sound they were known for.
