Just weeks after the 30th anniversary of his iconic debut in GoldenEye, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan is opening up about the slim possibility of a return to the franchise—but not as 007 himself.
London, UK — Three decades after he first burst onto the screen as James Bond in GoldenEye (1995), Pierce Brosnan, now 72, is weighing in on the future of the beloved espionage franchise and his potential involvement.
While the titular role is firmly “another man’s job,” Brosnan confessed to British GQ magazine that he has “entertained” the idea of appearing in a future installment, perhaps as a retired agent.
“Sometimes you entertain it and sometimes you just move on,” the father of five stated, adding that a blockbuster franchise “really gets in the way of life.”
The Amazon Era and Villeneuve’s Lure
The conversation around a potential return comes as the 007 series undergoes its most significant creative shakeup in decades. In a landmark $1 billion deal in February 2025, creative control of the intellectual property shifted from Eon Productions and the long-reigning Broccoli family to Amazon MGM Studios.
The new regime has already announced a stellar team for the next chapter, including Dune director Denis Villeneuve at the helm, alongside producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight as the writer.
This change initially piqued the interest of the actor, who starred in four Bond films before stepping away after 2002’s Die Another Day.
Brosnan previously expressed a strong desire to work with Villeneuve. “I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve, I would look at it in a heartbeat,” he told Radio Times. He joked about the possibilities: “It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics … who knows?”
Though his stance now appears slightly more measured, the actor remains fascinated by the shifting landscape. “The possibilities of working within that film… It’s going to be exciting to see what happens. I think everything changes, everything falls apart, so you just sit back and enjoy it all,” Brosnan mused.
Moving On from the Tuxedo
Brosnan, who followed Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton, and preceded Daniel Craig, has maintained a robust and fruitful career since his Bond tenure.
The actor has since starred in massive hits such as Laws of Attraction, Mamma Mia!, and Percy Jackson. Fans will next see him on the big screen in the action sequel, Cliffhanger 2, set for release in 2026.
As the industry waits for Amazon MGM Studios to announce the next actor to inherit the iconic Aston Martin keys, Brosnan remains a beloved figure whose four-film run cemented his place in Bond history.
