Fans of the critically acclaimed spy thriller ‘The Night Manager’, based on the beloved novel by John le Carré, are finally having their patience rewarded. After nearly a decade of anticipation, the BBC and Prime Video have unveiled a wealth of information regarding the second season, including first-look images, a trailer, and a confirmed release date, positioning the show as a highly anticipated New Year’s treat.
The new season is officially set to premiere in the UK on Thursday, January 1, 2026, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Global audiences on Prime Video will be able to watch it shortly after, starting Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Key Cast Returns and New Global Mission
Golden Globe-winning star Tom Hiddleston will reprise his iconic role as former British intelligence operative Jonathan Pine, though he will be living under the new alias Alex Goodwin, an MI6 officer in London. His return is prompted by a chance sighting of an old mercenary, leading him into a violent confrontation with a new adversary: Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos, played by Golden Globe-nominated actor Diego Calva.
- Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Jonathan Pine in the first season garnered him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.
- The first season, released in 2016, swept major awards, including Emmys, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs.
Oscar winner Olivia Colman will also return as intelligence officer Angela Burr, one of the few people who understands Pine’s past. Other returning cast members include Alistair Petrie as Sandy Langbourne, Douglas Hodge as Rex Mayhew, Michael Nardone as Frisky, and Noah Jupe as the now-grown Daniel Roper. Hugh Laurie, who played the primary villain Richard Roper in the first season, is confirmed as an Executive Producer for the new seasons.
The series will introduce a host of new characters central to the new narrative:
- Diego Calva (known for his role as Arturo Beltrán Leyva in Narcos: Mexico and Manny Torres in Babylon) joins as Teddy Dos Santos, the new antagonist.
- Camila Morrone (Primetime Emmy Award nominee for her role as Camila Alvarez-Dunne in Daisy Jones & The Six) joins as Roxana Bolaños, a businesswoman who reluctantly helps Pine infiltrate Teddy’s Colombian arms operation.
- Indira Varma (Doctor Who), Paul Chahidi (Wicked Little Letters), and Hayley Squires (Adult Material) are also among the new additions.
New Story Arc Beyond the Book
While the first season meticulously adapted John le Carré’s 1993 novel, the new chapter will venture into original storytelling, with show creator David Farr returning to write the screenplay.
- Charlotte Moore, the then-Chief Content Officer of the BBC, expressed immense excitement: “After years of fervent speculation I’m incredibly excited to confirm that The Night Manager is returning to the BBC for two more series.”
- Le Carré’s sons, Simon and Stephen Cornwell, who run the production company The Ink Factory, emphasised the significance of this decision, stating, “Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly…”
The entire second season will be helmed by BAFTA award-winning director Georgi Banks-Davies, known for her work on I Hate Suzie (for which she won a BAFTA) and directing the first two episodes of the Amazon series Paper Girls. Original season 1 director Susanne Bier confirmed she would not return, citing concerns about repeating herself and wanting a fresh perspective.
Filming for the six-episode second season took place across diverse international locations, including the UK, Spain, Colombia, and France, underscoring the global scale of Pine’s new mission. Set eight years after the events of the first season, the plot will see Pine racing to expose a deadly conspiracy involving arms trafficking and the training of a guerrilla army, a plot poised to destabilize an entire nation.
