“Still no new 007”: Heyman Confirms the James Bond Franchise is Still Shaken and Not Stirred, With a 2026 Release Date Now Unlikely

The highly anticipated cinematic return of the world’s most famous spy remains far on the horizon. Newly appointed producer David Heyman, the powerhouse behind billion-dollar franchises like Harry Potter and Barbie (2023), confirmed a disappointing update: the 007 franchise is still in its earliest stages, with no new James Bond actor selected and a 2026 release date now highly unlikely.2

The next film marks a tectonic shift in the franchise’s history, moving forward under the new creative control of Amazon MGM Studios and without the direct, decades-long leadership of former custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.3

⏳ The Absence of a Timeline and a New 007

In an interview with Screen Daily, Heyman, who is producing the next film alongside veteran producer Amy Pascal (known for the Spider-Man franchise), made it clear that development is a slow, deliberate process.4

  • No Release Date: Heyman confirmed that the project has not yet locked in a release date, a director schedule, or, crucially, its new leading man.5

  • The Director’s Schedule: The primary external factor influencing the delay is director Denis Villeneuve’s commitment to his current project. Heyman explicitly stated, “No timeline has been set on when the first feature in the relaunched franchise will be made or released.6 Denis [Villeneuve] is still filming Dune 3.”7

  • The Data: Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three (based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah) is currently slated for release in December 2026.8 Given the extensive post-production required for such an epic, the earliest production on Bond 26 is now rumored to start in 2027, pushing the film’s potential release to 2028.9 This lengthy gap would mark the longest delay between official Bond films since the six-year wait for GoldenEye (1995), which followed Licence to Kill (1989).10

The creative team is reportedly focusing on a “fresh-faced” British male, likely an “unknown in their 20s or 30s,” who can grow with the new era of the character.11

🎬 A Creative Reset Under Amazon MGM

Heyman’s appointment represents a significant creative reset following Daniel Craig’s emotional and explosive finale in No Time to Die (2021).12

Amazon MGM’s acquisition of the James Bond rights earlier this year led to the end of the Eon Productions era’s direct control.13 The studio reportedly sought a faster pace of development and the potential for a multimedia franchise, which reportedly clashed with the vision of Broccoli and Wilson.14

For Amazon MGM, Heyman’s track record makes him the ideal choice to reinvent 007.

Franchise Produced by David Heyman (Heyday Films) Worldwide Gross (Approx.) Significance
Harry Potter Series (8 films) Over $7.7 Billion Established his reputation as a steward of massive literary IP.
Paddington Films Over $480 Million Demonstrated an ability to shepherd critically acclaimed family films.
Gravity (2013) Over $723 Million Collaborated on a seven-time Oscar-winning film directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Barbie (2023) Over $1.4 Billion Produced one of the highest-grossing films of all time, directed by Greta Gerwig.

With a filmography earning over $10 billion worldwide, Heyman’s involvement signals that Amazon MGM is prioritizing creative quality and scale, even if it means an unprecedented wait for fans.15
