Atlanta Royalty Enshrined: OutKast Honored at Rock Hall, Tyler, The Creator Delivers Jaw-Dropping Tribute

The Peacock Theater in Los Angeles pulsed with the vibrant, genre-defying sound of Southern hip-hop royalty on November 8, 2025, as the legendary duo OutKast—comprised of Big Boi (Antwan Patton) and André 3000 (André Benjamin)—was formally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025.

Their induction cemented the duo’s status as musical futurists who redefined the boundaries of rap, incorporating elements of funk, psychedelia, and rock into an unmistakable sound that put Atlanta on the global music map.

Inductor and Emotional Acceptance Speeches

The duo was inducted by actor, writer, and musician Donald Glover (Childish Gambino), a fellow Atlanta native who cited OutKast’s unique sound as a profound inspiration. Glover praised the pair for their courage to be contradictory in both identity and sound, a quality that taught him, “You don’t have to scream, you don’t have to yell. You just have to be undeniable.”

The acceptance speeches were a mixture of gratitude and humble reflection. After a playful game of rock-paper-scissors with the Dungeon Family members on stage to decide who spoke first, Big Boi led off. He delivered a heartfelt thank you to his partner, André 3000, stating, “Thank you for making me be the best I can be, and going toe to toe on the records. Iron-sharpen-iron just to be the best.”

André 3000 followed, delivering an unscripted, emotional reflection on their humble beginnings, emphasizing that “great things start in little rooms,” a nod to the basement “dungeon” in Atlanta where their careers began.

The Album That Broke the Mold

OutKast’s induction highlighted their consistent innovation, particularly their 2003 double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

This monumental, split-concept album saw each member take the lead on a separate disc—Big Boi with the more traditional Southern hip-hop of Speakerboxxx, and André 3000 with the funk, jazz, and pop-infused The Love Below. The album was a commercial and critical titan:

  • It became the only rap album in history to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2004.
  • It was certified Diamond by the RIAA, representing over 10 million units sold in the U.S.
  • It featured two massive, back-to-back #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move”, making OutKast the first duo ever to replace themselves at the chart’s summit.

Tyler, The Creator’s Electric “B.O.B.” Performance

The evening’s tribute performance was a generational celebration featuring a constellation of artists influenced by OutKast. While André 3000 opted not to perform, Big Boi joined a collective of stars to run through a medley of the group’s biggest hits.

The highlight of the night was Tyler, The Creator’s frenetic rendition of “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)” from the 2000 album, Stankonia.

  • The Performance: Dressed in a vibrant red jacket, the rapper commanded the stage with a live band, expertly navigating the song’s famously rapid-fire, chaotic, and revolutionary flow. His energy and precise delivery of the track’s futuristic aggression left the audience in a standing ovation, with many fans online immediately calling it a definitive tribute moment.
  • The Medley: The performance also featured fellow Atlanta artists J.I.D. joining Big Boi for “ATLiens,” Doja Cat delivering her take on “Ms. Jackson,” and Janelle Monáe offering a soulful, acoustic guitar version of “Hey Ya!” The medley closed with Killer Mike joining the ensemble for “The Whole World.”

Tyler’s high-octane performance perfectly bridged the legacy of OutKast’s boundary-pushing past with the experimental, eclectic nature of contemporary hip-hop, proving that the sonic vision Big Boi and André 3000 cultivated in their “little rooms” continues to shape the genre today.
